Palm oil production

In most parts of Cameroon, peasant farmers still use outdated and laborious methods to produce palm oil. This grandmother is at the final stage of converting the yellowish paste into the red liquid oil. The ripe nuts are first harvested, boiled and pounded with sticks and feet (inset)to separate the hard kennel seeds and other fibre from the oil. The paste is further boiled to eliminate water and convert it to a bright red liquid. Palm oil is used as food and major ingredient in the manufacture of soaps.
