Pharma Expo Cameroon 2025

The second edition of Pharma Expo Cameroon, an international professional forum of pharmacists took place at Sawa Hotel Douala, from the 10^th to the 13^th September2025. Organized by the “Conseil National de l’Ordre des Pharmaciens du Cameroun (CNOP)”, the event drew participants from 17 countries-thanks to the dynamism and networking talents of Dr. Franck Nana the CNOPC president.

The theme of the conference was “Import Substitution of Conventional Medicines, Production of Ameliorated Traditional Medicines:  Opportunities and Challenges in the Sector. The theme was very apt for Cameroon with a nascent pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and a chaotic traditional medicine sector where charlatans abound.

Currently, Cameroon has about 8 registered functioning production units that are responsible for the production of only 5% of the country’s needs and is apparently the only country in the CEMAC zone with pharmaceutical production plants. In contrast, for example, in North Africa, Algeria has 220 plants that cover 70 % of the domestic market and in West Africa, Nigeria has 130 factories that cover about 35% of the domestic market. Egypt has 170 plants, South Africa 270, Ghana 30, Uganda 26 and Kenya 36. There is therefore a dire need for more production units in Cameroon in particular and in the Central African zone in general.

Local and foreign experts presented very enriching papers on a wide range of topics directly or indirectly linked to the theme of Pharma Expo 2025. These topics included but not limited to, the promotion of local industries, import substitution, the training of pharmacy students, substandard and counterfeit medicines, standardization of traditional medicines, Concept of Nutritional Supplements, local industry and Health insurance, illegal practice of pharmacy, pharmaceutical market share, Digital Transformation, NAFDAC operations in Nigeria and supply chain control measures.

The whole Expo was spiced with multiple socio cultural events. The day prior to the official opening was dedicated to touring historical/cultural sites and palaces of the Douala people who are indigenes of the host city. The highlight of the tour was the visit to the Maritime Museum which is an architectural replica of a ship and in which all simulation of ship movements can be experienced. A lot of the illustrative history of Cameroon is in there and from the top of the building, you can see the River Wouri from where Cameroon derived her name.

Attendance at Pharma Expo 2025 was quite encouraging. About 1700 registered participants were recorded and over 60 stands were occupied by various companies. The various committees performed their functions satisfactorily. The success of Pharma Expo 2025 has just gone to wet the appetite of Pharma Expo 2027.

Pharma Expo Cameroun 2025 (French)

La deuxième édition de Pharma Expo Cameroun, forum professionnel international des pharmaciens, s'est tenue à l'hôtel Sawa de Douala, du 10 au 13 septembre 2025. Organisé par le Conseil national de l'ordre des pharmaciens du Cameroun (CNOPC), l'événement a attiré des participants de 17 pays, grâce au dynamisme et aux talents de ‘networking’ du Dr Franck Nana, président du CNOPC.

 Le thème de la conférence était « Import-Substitution des médicaments conventionnels, production de médicaments traditionnels améliorés : opportunités et défis dans le domaine ». Ce thème était particulièrement pertinent pour le Cameroun, dont le secteur pharmaceutique est encore balbutiant et le secteur de la médecine traditionnelle, chaotique et où les charlatans abondent.

Le Cameroun compte actuellement environ huit unités de production opérationnelles enregistrées, qui ne couvrent que 5 % des besoins du pays. Il semblerait que ce pays soit le seul de la zone CEMAC à posséder des unités de production pharmaceutique. À titre de comparaison, en Afrique du Nord, l'Algérie compte 220 usines qui couvrent 70 % du marché intérieur, et en Afrique de l'Ouest, le Nigéria compte 130 usines qui couvrent environ 35 % du marché intérieur. L'Égypte compte 170 usines, l'Afrique du Sud 270, le Ghana 30, l'Ouganda 26 et le Kenya 36. Il existe donc un besoin urgent de davantage d'unités de production, au Cameroun en particulier et en Afrique centrale en général.

 Des experts locaux et étrangers ont présenté des communications très enrichissantes sur un large éventail de sujets liés  directement ou indirectement au thème de Pharma Expo 2025. Ont été abordés, notamment la promotion des industries locales, la substitution aux importations, la formation des étudiants en pharmacie, les médicaments de qualité inférieure et contrefaits, la standardisation des médecines traditionnelles, le concept de compléments alimentaires, l'industrie locale et l'assurance maladie, l'exercice illégal de la pharmacie, la part de marché pharmaceutique, la transformation numérique, les opérations de la NAFDAC au Nigéria et les mesures de contrôle de la chaîne d'approvisionnement.

 L'exposition a été agrémentée de multiples événements socioculturels. La veille de l'ouverture officielle a été consacrée à la visite de sites historiques et culturels et des palais des chefs Doualas- populations autochtones de la ville hôte. Le point culminant de la visite a été la visite du Musée maritime, réplique architecturale d'un navire permettant de simuler les mouvements d'un navire. L'histoire illustrative du Cameroun se trouve dans ce bâtiment  et du haut du bâtiment, on aperçoit le fleuve Wouri, d'où le Cameroun tire son nom.

La fréquentation de Pharma Expo 2025 a été très encourageante. Environ 1 700 participants étaient inscrits et plus de 60 stands étaient occupés par diverses entreprises. Les comités ont rempli leurs fonctions de manière satisfaisante. Le succès de Pharma Expo 2025 a ravivé l'intérêt pour Pharma Expo 2027.
